Dear Readers,
Last month we launched our newsletter ‘From the desk of Yamini Reddy’ and were very happy to send out our first issue to all our readers. We have received a very welcoming response from the community and as promised I hope to continue to bring refreshing articles and news from the world of Kuchipudi and more.
Recently I came across a copyright’s infringement case in Kuchipudi. A copyright infringement suit had been filed before the District Court, Trivandrum, against Facebook India by Smt Priyanka Vempati Ravishankar. The reason for filing the suit was that certain unknown people had posted without authorisation from the original sound recordings created by Vempati Ravi Shankar her late husband on social media platforms – Facebook and Instagram. Finally, a temporary injunction was granted on the plea stating that she held copyright over the works of her late husband.
This made me think how important it is to have a good understanding of copyrights as an artist. More often than not as an artist we end up in a situation where we knowingly or unknowingly digress copyright laws. While copyrights laws are very subjective and are still at a very nascent stage in our country, I felt a basic understanding of it will help us move forward cautiously into the digital age. It is my privilege that Ex Justice B.N. Sri Krishna has written this month’s guest column to give us a understanding of copyrights in India.
In the coming month we hope to bring forth more interactive sessions on the same subject on our social media handles. Don’t forget to follow us and drop us your email ID to get your issue of “From the desk of Yamini Reddy”.
Meanwhile hope you enjoy your read and do write back to us with suggestions about what you would like to explore through our newsletter.
