Growing up surrounded by dancers, I instinctively have been involved in the art form of Kuchipudi since before I can even remember. Watching my parent’s performances, rehearsals, and how they developed their choreographies gave me a huge insight into all the work around the life of building a career as a performing artist. While I started training as a performer in the studio, it was the conversations at the dinner table which was invaluable to me and enabled my growth as an artist. Coming from a family of dancer I have been privy to so many things in the dance world. While not always intentional, it was the passion for dance and the need to take the art form of Kuchipudi to a larger audience that anchored the conversation around this subject so enthusiastically into our daily lives. Not limited to just my family, we often had scholars, artistes and individuals of different pursuits engaging and sharing so much. In hindsight I have realized that I learned so much by just being present in that environment. There were times when I took this learning for granted. But having grown and established myself as an individual artist, I realize that while an unrelenting pursuit of one’s artistic career is important, it is equally important to know about all that surrounds the art. These subjects shape the way we think and help us shift focus from the self and make us see a larger picture – the artistic community we are present in.This monthly newsletter is the result of the very same. To share my experiences and initiatives as a Kuchipudi dancer, to bring forward varied voices to the forefront through guest writings, to open dialogues surrounding dance and to bring awareness of all the unique opportunities in today’s world that one can pursue as a dancer.I am happy the first issue is coming out around the auspicious occasion of ‘Gurupoornima’, I dedicate it to my parents and gurus who continue to guide me on my path. This initiative is one that is close to my heart and I do hope this read would be enjoyable and educational for you..
